What Problem Is Your Water Heater Having?

Some water heater problems require a relatively simple repair, while others can indicate that the tank or system is approaching the end of its useful life. Select the problem that most closely matches what you are experiencing to learn about the possible causes and when professional service may be needed.

No Hot Water

If your water heater has stopped producing hot water, the problem could involve the pilot light, ignition system, heating elements, thermostat, gas supply, or electrical components.

Water Heater Leaking

Water can leak from supply connections, valves, fittings, the drain valve, or the water heater tank itself. The location and severity of the leak help determine whether the system can be repaired.

Not Enough Hot Water

Running out of hot water sooner than expected may be caused by temperature settings, sediment buildup, a worn component, increased household demand, or an undersized water heater.

Water Around the Bottom of the Tank

Water collecting beneath a water heater can come from a leaking drain valve, condensation, a nearby connection, the T&P relief valve, or a deteriorating tank.

Water Heater Making Noise

Popping, rumbling, banging, or sizzling sounds can be associated with sediment buildup, restricted water movement, overheating, or normal expansion and contraction.

Rusty or Discolored Hot Water

Brown, orange, or rusty-looking hot water may indicate sediment, corrosion, aging plumbing, or deterioration inside the water heater.

Water Temperature Problems

Water that is too hot, not hot enough, or changes temperature unexpectedly may point to thermostat settings, failing components, flow problems, or mineral buildup.

Tankless Water Heater Problems

Tankless error codes, fluctuating temperatures, ignition failures, reduced flow, and unexpected shutdowns may be caused by scale buildup, venting, fuel supply, sensors, or system components.

When a Water Heater Problem Needs Immediate Attention

Some symptoms should not be ignored. Turn off the water heater and contact a professional if you notice:

Water actively leaking from the tank

Water spreading toward walls, flooring, or electrical equipment

A gas odor near the water heater

Scorching, melted wiring, or unusual electrical smells

Water or steam repeatedly discharging from the relief valve

Unusual signs of overheating

A carbon monoxide alarm

For an active water leak, shut off the cold-water supply valve to the water heater when it is safe to do so. If you cannot locate or safely operate that valve, shut off the main water supply to the house. If you smell gas, leave the area immediately and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location.

Does the Water Heater Need Repair or Replacement?

A water heater problem does not automatically mean that the entire system needs to be replaced. The appropriate recommendation depends on:

  • The source of the problem
  • The water heater’s age and condition
  • Whether the tank itself is leaking
  • The cost and availability of replacement parts
  • The system’s maintenance history
  • Whether repeated repairs have already been needed

The Water Heater Guy will evaluate the system, explain what we find, and provide clear options and upfront pricing before work begins.
