Water Heater Making Noise?

What the Sounds Could Mean—and What to Do Next

Hearing popping, rumbling, banging, or whistling? Some sounds are part of normal operation. Others need attention. The sound—and when it happens—can help point us toward the cause.

The Water Heater Guy will identify the problem and explain whether maintenance, repair, or replacement makes sense.

Is the Noise Normal—or Does It Need Attention?

May Be Normal

  • Light ticking as pipes warm and cool, or familiar operating sounds described in your owner’s manual, may be normal. A sound that is new, louder, or changing deserves attention.

Schedule an Inspection

Recurring popping, rumbling, banging, or vibration should be checked—especially if you also notice less hot water, temperature changes, moisture, or an error code.

When to Act Immediately

If you smell gas or suspect escaping gas, leave the area immediately. Do not operate switches, use a phone nearby, or try to investigate. Call your gas utility or 911 from a safe location.

If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call 911.

If you notice steam, unusually hot water, or repeated discharge from the temperature and pressure relief valve, stop using the system and seek urgent professional assistance. Keep clear of the discharge. Never cap or block the relief valve or its discharge pipe.

Helpful Details When You Call

Tell us about changes in hot water, visible moisture, or any error code. A photo of the model label or a short recording of the sound can help if safely accessible. Do not recreate the problem or remove covers to record it.

Popping or Rumbling While Heating

Mineral deposits can collect at the bottom of a tank. Water heating beneath those deposits can create popping or rumbling sounds.

Have the tank’s condition and maintenance history checked. A flush may help, but heavy, hardened buildup may remain.

Banging When a Faucet or Appliance Shuts Off

A sudden stop in water flow can send a pressure wave through the pipes. This is called water hammer, and the sound may travel toward the water heater.

Have the piping and water pressure evaluated. Replacing the heater may not address the source of this noise.

Ticking or Light Tapping

Pipes can make light ticking sounds as they warm and cool. Heat-trap fittings at the water heater’s connections can also make noise as water moves.

Have it checked if it becomes louder, changes, or comes with another symptom.

Hissing or Sizzling

On a gas tank, moisture contacting hot surfaces can sizzle. That moisture may be condensation or a leak. On an electric tank, mineral buildup around a heating element can also cause noise.

Arrange a prompt inspection for persistent sizzling or visible moisture. If you suspect escaping gas, leave immediately and follow the safety guidance above.

Whistling or Squealing

A high-pitched sound can come from restricted water flow, a valve, or a pressure-related problem. Equipment with a blower may also develop noise from that component.

Have persistent whistling checked. Do not adjust or block the relief valve to try to stop the sound.

If none of the urgent warning signs above apply, notice when the noise happens: while the heater is warming water, while a faucet is running, or when a faucet or appliance shuts off.

What Noise Are You Hearing?

Start with the sound that best matches yours. These are possible causes; the sound alone cannot confirm the problem.

Humming, Buzzing, or Vibration

Some equipment makes a quiet operating hum. A new or unusually loud buzz or vibration may involve a loose component, heating element, fan, pump, or burner.

Tell us when it happens. We’ll check the components appropriate to your system.

Will Maintenance Help—or Do I Need a Repair?

The right service depends on what is causing the noise and the condition of your water heater.

Maintenance May Help

When sediment or mineral buildup is responsible, tank flushing or tankless descaling may help. We assess the system first and explain what the service can reasonably accomplish. A flush cannot guarantee a quiet tank or remove every hardened deposit.

A Repair May Be Needed

A valve, heating element, blower, burner, or piping problem needs attention to that specific cause. We’ll explain what we find and provide pricing before approved repairs begin.

When Replacement Makes Sense

Noise alone does not mean you need a new water heater. If the tank itself is leaking or the system has significant deterioration, we’ll explain your replacement options alongside any practical repair choices.
